Where ERP Equals Your Competitive Advantage

Solana Beach, CA, Release: May 24th 2021. For Immediate Release

Companies considering a new ERP system face worrying statistics: around half of all ERP projects fail, costs are significantly exceeded, schedules are not met, and improvements do not live up to expectations. Data suggests that the main reason is the implementation of the ERP software. Mistakes at the early stages set the whole project off on the wrong track. The truth is that most ERP projects do not fail because of a poor selection process or the functionality of the ERP software. They fail because of the ERP implementation process.

In our experience the following are reasons ERP implementations fail or are challenged.

  1. Lack of rigor in the implementation process
    1. This is the VAR’s responsibility to establish, and both the VAR and Customers responsibility to maintain.
    2. This includes a thorough discovery process.
  2. Lack of dedicated team and project manager on part of customer
    1. Some one must own the product, understand the companies business and business processes, and how the companies data relates.
  3. Integrations
    1. Moving data between business systems can be difficult
  4. Data Cleansing and Data Prep often take longer than anticipated, and delay projects.
  5. Lack of training or accepting training and focus.
    1. This is the VAR’s responsibility to establish, and both the VAR and Customers responsibility to maintain.
  6. Waiting to the “last” moment to test key business processes like “book to bill” and “procure to pay”
    1. Attention to details is key, and is insuring documents and paperwork.
    2. This relates to #1
  7. Insuring reports and data used to run the business are vetted and delivered.
    1. Often senior management are not involved in the ERP deployment, yet appropriately demand
  8. Trying to do “too much.”
    1. Extreme business process reengineering takes a dedicated staff to vet processes.
    2. Typical midmarket ERP’s should be designed to allow continuous improvements post the initial deployment (which can contain process improvements within reason).
